5-The newspaper files of March and April, 1849, disclose evidence of the enterprise of Irwin & Foster, when they won out over obstacles. It was the time when the entire country was wild with the fever of California gold. Cincinnati, as an important transportation center, watched thousands of emigrants passing through by wagon, train and boat. A new steamboat had been built at Cincinnati and this the firm of Irwin & Foster took over for a purpose they advertised in the newspapers throughout March, 1849, as follows:30
