5-The newspaper files of March and April, 1849, disclose evidence of the enterprise of Irwin & Foster, when they won out over obstacles. It was the time when the entire country was wild with the fever of California gold. Cincinnati, as an important transporta­tion center, watched thousands of emigrants passing through by wagon, train and boat. A new steamboat had been built at Cincinnati and this the firm of Irwin & Foster took over for a purpose they advertised in the news­papers throughout March, 1849, as follows:30
